Barbell Squat

Master this foundational lift for total lower-body strength.

The Barbell Squat is a full-body movement that focuses on lower-body strength, power, and control. It’s a foundational exercise in nearly every strength training program.

Instructions

  1. Position the bar on a rack just below shoulder height and load it with appropriate weight.
  2. Step under the bar and rest it on your upper traps, gripping the bar firmly.
  3. Unrack the bar and step back into a shoulder-width stance, toes slightly out.
  4. Inhale and lower into a squat until your thighs are at least parallel to the ground.
  5. Drive through your heels to return to standing and repeat.
