This page covers how to perform the overhead press, including tips, variations, and the muscle groups it targets.

The overhead press is a timeless lift that develops pressing power, postural control, and full-body tension. Unlike the bench press, this movement requires you to stabilize the weight through your entire kinetic chain. When performed with proper form, it strengthens not just the shoulders, but your ability to move and hold weight overhead with confidence.

Instructions

  1. Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart and the barbell racked at collarbone level in a squat rack.
  2. Grip the bar slightly wider than shoulder-width with your wrists stacked over your elbows.
  3. Brace your core, squeeze your glutes, and press the bar straight overhead.
  4. As the bar clears your forehead, push your head slightly forward to bring the bar in line with your midfoot.
  5. Lock out your elbows at the top and pause briefly.
  6. Lower the bar under control back to the starting position and repeat.
