Learn about the structure and function of abdominal muscles and their role in core strength and posture.
Abs (Abdominal Muscles)
The abdominal muscles are located on the front of the body, between the ribs and the pelvis. They consist of several main groups: the transversus abdominis (deepest layer), rectus abdominis (the "six-pack" muscle), external obliques, and internal obliques.
These muscles are vital for supporting the trunk, allowing movement between the ribcage and pelvis, holding internal organs in place, and regulating internal abdominal pressure (important for functions like breathing, coughing, and childbirth). Together with back muscles, they form the "core" and help maintain stability, balance, and protect the spine.
