Calves
Learn about the anatomy and function of calf muscles and their importance in movement and posture.
Calves
The calf muscle, also known as the triceps surae, is located in the back of your lower leg, extending from just below your knee to your ankle. It is primarily made up of two main muscles: the gastrocnemius (the large, superficial muscle forming most of the calf) and the soleus (a wider, flatter muscle sitting deeper). Both of these muscles attach to the Achilles tendon, which then connects to the heel bone. A smaller muscle called the plantaris may also be present, running between the gastrocnemius and soleus.
These muscles are responsible for plantar flexion (pointing the toes downward), which is essential for movements like walking, running, jumping, and standing on your toes. They also contribute to maintaining stability, balance, and proper posture by stabilizing the ankle and lower leg.
