Neck

Explore the function of neck muscles in support, movement, and vital actions.

Neck (Neck Muscles)

You have about 30 neck muscles that extend from the base of your skull and jaw down to your shoulder blades and collarbone. These muscles are part of a complex musculoskeletal system connecting the base of your skull to your torso. They are generally categorized into anterior (front), lateral (side), and posterior (back) groups.

Neck muscles are essential for supporting and stabilizing your head, neck, and the upper part of your spine. They enable a wide range of head movements, including moving forward, backward, side to side, and twisting. Beyond movement, neck muscles also assist with critical functions such as chewing, swallowing, speaking, making facial expressions, and regulating breathing by elevating the upper ribs.
