Discover the muscles that stabilize and move the shoulder joint.
Shoulders (Shoulder Muscles)
The shoulder is a ball-and-socket joint supported by approximately eight muscles that provide strength, stability, and a wide range of motion. These muscles surround the top of the arm where it connects to the body's trunk, attaching to the scapula (shoulder blade), humerus (upper arm bone), and clavicle (collarbone). The most important shoulder muscles include the four rotator cuff muscles (subscapularis, supraspinatus, infraspinatus, and teres minor) and other supporting muscles like the deltoid, trapez...
Shoulder muscles serve various functions, including holding the bones of the shoulder joint in place, moving the arms in all directions (up, down, forward, backward, and rotation), and protecting the shoulder joint. The rotator cuff muscles specifically help raise and rotate the arms and provide structural support, while the deltoid aids in arm abduction, flexion, extension, and rotation. The trapezius helps lift and lower the shoulder blade, and the rhomboids help pull the shoulder blades back.
